PBI UNY in Collaboration with DISDIKPORA Kebumen Successfully Held English Teaching Training for Elementary Teachers

Kebumen, July 13, 17, and 18, 2024 – In an effort to enhance English teaching skills for elementary school teachers, the Kebumen Education, Youth, and Sports Office (Disdikpora) partnered with UNY's English Education Program to host a collaborative workshop. The event welcomed 500 teachers from the Kebumen region, led by Dr. Lusi Nurhayati, M.App.Ling. Over three days, participants engaged in valuable learning experiences they could apply in their classrooms.

Tackling English Teaching Challenges

Dr. Lusi highlighted a critical issue: "Not all elementary teachers are well-equipped to teach English. A recent survey by PBI UNY found that many lack formal training in the subject." To address this, the workshop focused on providing teachers with creative and enjoyable English teaching methods while promoting respect for diverse cultures.

Dynamic and Memorable Sessions

The workshop kicked off on July 13 with a Zoom session covering essential topics such as effective teaching strategies, suitable English texts for young learners, and assessment methods. Participants actively engaged, asking questions and sharing insights.

On July 17, the program continued at Hotel Candisari Kebumen with a more hands-on approach. Teachers were divided into ten classes of 50, each guided by experts in Teaching English for Young Learners (TEYL). They explored topics like Basic Classroom English and Creative Pedagogy, learning to incorporate songs, stories, games, and crafts into their teaching. The atmosphere was lively and interactive, with teachers creating teaching modules for the following day's practice.

The final day, July 18, featured micro-teaching, a highlight for many participants. Teachers practiced their English lessons in groups, with support from UNY lecturers. This hands-on experience allowed them to apply the techniques learned, fostering a vibrant and collaborative classroom environment.

Positive Feedback from Participants

The workshop received enthusiastic responses from attendees. "The training and speakers were fantastic," said Yuliningsih, S.Pd. "I found the teaching techniques very practical and immediately applicable in my classroom." said Sri Agus Dwi Wahyuni, S.Pd., and more she suggested, "We should continue these activities to enhance our skills in making learning enjoyable for students."

Many teachers expressed newfound motivation and insights. "I feel more confident teaching English now. The new methods I've learned will definitely engage my students," one participant shared with excitement.

With this successful workshop, there is hope that elementary teachers in Kebumen will become more confident and innovative in their English instruction, creating enjoyable learning experiences for their students while fostering an appreciation for languages and cultures. Initiatives like this can have a lasting positive impact on education in Indonesia.
