Learning English Through ICT, Games, and Mini Debates at SMAN 2 Playen

During the Praktik Kependidikan (PK) program at SMAN 2 Playen, Gunungkidul, Grade XII P2 & P5 students participated in English learning activities using Wordwall and a mini debate. The activities took place during the PK period in August–September 2026. The activities focused on vocabulary practice and discussion texts up to exposition texts. They were related to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), particularly the goal of providing quality education and developing relevant skills for students.

The activities were conducted as part of the students’ concentration English lessons. First, students practiced vocabulary using Wordwall, an online learning platform that provides activities. The games were used in groups and displayed on the classroom screen. Students could also access them through their phones. After the vocabulary practice, students learned about discussion text, including the issue, arguments for and against, and conclusion or recommendation. Students then worked in groups and were given pro or contra positions. They prepared arguments and presented them in a mini debate. Topics included gadget use among teenagers, a cashless society, and flexing on social media.

The activities gave students opportunities to practice both their English knowledge and communication skills. During the practicum, students participated more in vocabulary activities when Wordwall was used. Some students were also able to use connecting words such as on the other hand, in contrast, and therefore during the debate. Several students who did not usually volunteer to speak also participated in the activity. These activities support SDG 4 because students were given opportunities to improve their learning outcomes and develop skills that can be useful for communication.

The use of simple technology such as Wordwall can be continued as an alternative for vocabulary practice in English classes. The mini debate can also be used in other lessons when students need to practice expressing opinions and responding to different arguments. Through activities that combine technology, language practice, and speaking, students can have more opportunities to use English actively in the classroom.
