WORKSHOP ON RESEARCH METHODOLOGY WITH DR. DAT BAO FROM MONASH UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA

FBS-Karangmalang On December 15, 2014, the Department of Education and English again held a research methodology workshop on the 3rd floor of the PLA building, FBS UNY. This event was attended by English Education lecturers, students, and several invited guests. Acting as resource persons were Prof. Dr. Suwarsih Madya, Vice Chancellor IV of UNY, and Dr. Dat Bao from Monash University Australia. This activity is part of a series of Guest Lecture programs that will be held for 5 days from 15 to 19 December 2014. In addition to the workshop, Dr. Dat Bao will also give public lectures to English Language and Literature Education students.

Dr. Dat Bao delivered his material entitled "Introducing Teachers to Research methods". He explained three sub-themes, namely action research, self-monitoring in teacher development, and the experimental method. There were several things he said, firstly that many Asian students who are studying in Australia do not have adequate competence in conducting their dissertation research so that a lot of time is wasted. Secondly, judging from the proposal alone, it can be seen whether the weight of the problem formulated has met the standards to be used as dissertation research. The third most basic problem, one often encountered in dissertation research, is determining the problem to be studied. In general, Indonesian Ph.D. teacher students want to examine something without any effort to see where it is among the existing studies. In short, the research roadmap is not clearly defined. Fourth, that is why the first thing to do in conducting research is to read at least 70 journal titles appropriate to what to examine. From here then they can look for gaps or problems that arise so that the problem to be studied is clearly positioned among the studies that have been carried out by other scholars. This method is the most preferred by dissertation supervisors.

Apart from presenting the material, he also performs other attractions such as singing and reciting poets, which are other skills he has. Dr. Dat Bao can no longer be doubted in his competence as a researcher when viewed from his track record of activities in the world of research. During this time, he has worked with Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK, Cornell University in the USA, the National University of Singapore, and the Assumption University of Thailand. His expertise includes curriculum design, intercultural communication, materials development, classroom aversion, literacy development, creative pedagogy, and visual pedagogy in language education. With research experience in the UK, Australia, China, the Philippines, and Thailand he has more than 20 books and international journal publications. He has given many presentations on four continents including being a plenary speaker at international conferences. He is also a creative writer and artist with poets, short stories, and illustrated artwork published in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Argentina, and other countries. (IA-Humas FBS)
