A SERIES OF INTERESTING ACTIVITIES OF PKKMB 2017 IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT FBS UNY

FBS Karangmalang By bringing the theme of “Developing a Humanistic and Innovative Youth to Face the Global Era, “, English Education Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta conducted the Orientation days for Freshmen as called as Pengenalan Kehidupan Kampus Mahasiswa Baru (PKKMB) as new experiences for freshmen. PKKMB 2017 succeeded to fail the old perception relating to the physical and mental ‘torture’ and uncommon tasks student orentation. Instead, the orientation was arranged to support students to learn about the department, especially about academic programs, class admission, students’ life and campus services.

PKKMB was held on August 24, 2017 in the front yard of LMT Building. Any interesting activities successfully engaged freshmen to learn about their campus life. The academic dialog invited Sukarno, M. Hum, the Head of English Department, and Susanna Widyastuti, S. S., M.A, the Head of English Literature Study Program, and Aryanti Eka Lestari, students 2015 Class, as the moderator.

“To grow the humanistic and innovative youth in the global era, the active involvement of students in academic, social and religious aspects are all we need. To be a student, you need to be creative, innovative, professional, critical and you need preparation, struggle, and self understanding about your potential,” Sukarno said.

“We need to develop our self by using the word of “know”, know about the environment and cultural context, activities, characters, facilities and others. Moreover, students need to develop good study stills for being humanistic and innovative youth in the global era,” Susanna invited students to choose their focus of study.

The second program of the orientation was music performance by EDSAcoustic (English Department Student Association Acoustic). The group was part of Student Organization under English Education Department to accommodate students’ interest in acoustic. EDSAcoustic performed different group members twice. They entertained Class 2017 freshmen by performing popular English songs.

The third program was EMAC (English Movie Appreciation Community) as the other group to be a part of English Education student organization. In this activity, freshmen watched the audio-visual works of English Education students as the entertaining and educative video about the campus life with parents, lectures, friends and the surroundings.

The fourth program was to introduce the committee and the executive teams in the student organization. The chairman introduced the divisions in the organization, namely AEDD (Applied English Development Division), HRDD (Human Resources Development Division), D’Elit (Division of English Library, Information and Technology), ALD (Art and Literature Division), dan Fusion (Fund Raising Division).

The next program was the freshmen’s visit to SALC (Self Access Learning Center). SALC is the center of independent learning for students at the highest floor at the faculty building of C13. Freshmen enjoyed the comfort zone to learn English at this room. It provides various learning media to develop their skills and knowledge in English.

The last program was the performance of Relung Theater, as the English student group who were interest in theatre.  Relung Theater perfomed the comical drama entitled “orang Kasar” . Freshmen laughed and enjoyed the unique comical performance of Relung Theater.

It shows that student orientation in English Education program of Faculty of Languages and Arts is humanistic. It was clearly about motivation, entertainment and acknowledgment for engaging freshmen to be closer to their friends, community and their opportunities in the campus.
